St. Nicholas Skit
Authors: Alwin Abraham, Milan Babu, Shawn Thomas, Vinu Varughese
This skit was created for a regional Sunday School conference held in Detroit. The kids were give 45 mins to learn about St. Nicholas and to learn this skit. Then they were to perform it later that evening. Although St. Nicholas's story often get drowned out in the hoopla around "Santa Clause", his life was one of humble service. His "secret" charity was done with compassion along with the right attitude of directing glory to the One whom it is due. (You can watch the performance from the Sunday school regional here.)

Script
Narrator: A long time ago, in a remote village far away, there was a father with three daughters, all of age to be married. Here we see the father trying to set up a wedding for his third daughter.
Jacob: Well then it’s settled! The wedding will be next month.
Zach: As you know, my son is a high ranking official in our village, how will we share the expenses of this wedding?
Jacob: Well you know I am just a pawn broker, and I have very little money. All I can give you are my blessings.
Paul: What?! This is unacceptable to our family. We were planning a grand wedding. A girl with nothing to offer me will be no bride of mine.
(storm out of room)
Jacob: How will we ever find grooms for my three girls?
Mark: Yeah, this same thing happened with the two guys before this with Mary and Elizabeth.
Luke: Want me to beat this guy up?
Jacob: Be reasonable Luke! I don’t know what we’re going to do.
Narrator: On the road to the city we see a very pious and loving man named Nicholas. Nicholas has been traveling from town to town, spreading the love of Jesus through his actions. Nicholas is just entering the town when he hears the townspeople talking.
(townspeople talking and Nicholas off to the side listening to their conversation)
TP 1: Did you hear about Jacob and his daughter?
TP 2: Yeah, Zechariah wouldn’t let his son marry somebody who has no money to give him.
TP 3: And you know, this isn’t the first time this has happened. The same thing happened with his other two daughters because he had no money to pay for the grooms.
TP 4: I heard one of the daughters have 3 arms.
TP 5: You always say the most ridiculous things, Frank.
Narrator: Nicholas hearing the plight of this family decided he was going to help the father marry off his daughters.
(Nighttime, Nicholas walks by and throws the bag of coins over the fence)
Narrator: That night, Nicholas walked by the home of Jacob and his three daughters and threw a bag of gold coins into their home.
(Jacob finds coins and is amazed)
Jacob: Oh my gosh! Look at all this money! God has heard our prayers and sent an angel so that Mary may be married!
Narrator: The next night, Nicholas did the same thing again. He went to the home of the Jacob and his three daughters, and threw another bag of gold coins into his home.
(Nicholas throws another bag of coins into Jacob’s home)
Jacob: The Lord is good! Now Martha can get married. I must find this great and gracious soul and thank him for what he has done. Tomorrow night, I will wait at the fence and thank him personally for changing our lives.
Narrator: Nicholas heard of Jacob’s plan and did not want his identity to be known. Nicholas felt that all the glory of his gifts should be given to God and not to Nicholas. Nicholas thought of a plan where he would throw the bag of coins down the chimney of Jacob’s home.
(Jacob is sitting and waiting at his fence for Nicholas, but Nicholas comes from the back and drops the bag of coins down the chimney)
Esther: Jacob, come inside! I found another bag of gold in our chimney!
Jacob: Clearly, this man does not want us to find out his identity. But praise God for answering our prayers and sending His people to help those who are faithful to Him. Now all our daughters can get married and live happy lives.
Narrator: The story of Nicholas’s acts toward this poor family spread quickly throughout the land and eventually the world. The legend that Nicholas dropped the bag of coins down the poor man’s chimney led to the creation of what we know today as Santa Claus (Someone comes in as Santa) It is no mystery how St. Nicholas became a saint.
