Sunday School

Sunday school is one of the ways we instill in our youth the belief and knowledge of the Lord, as well as the traditions of our church.  Through Sunday school the church invests directly into the next generation.

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."
            - Proverbs 22:6

Structure

Our Sunday school year is in line with the academic school year, running from September to June.  Classes meet before Qurbana from 9-10am.  The students are split into 6 different classes, each with 2 teachers:

  • Pre-school
  • Class 1 ~ corresponds academically to younger grade school
  • Class 2 ~ corresponds academically to older grade school
  • Class 3 ~ corresponds academically to junior high
  • Class 4 ~ corresponds academically to high school freshmen & sophmores
  • Class 5 ~ corresponds academically to high school juniors/seniors

The diocese has provided us with a national curriculum and lesson books.  The national curriculum consists of 10 separate grades, each with their own lesson book.  Each lesson book has 4 units, covering: Prayer, Old Testament, New Testament, Church Spirituality & History.

To fit this national curriculum within our class structure, each class covers 2 lesson books over 2 years (ie. class 1 is doing book 1&2, class 2 is doing book 3&4, ...)  Thus, students stay in a particular class for 2 years before moving into the next class.  (A new class is formed every 2 years.)  The Pre-school class doesn't cover a particular book; rather, we are using various videos, story books, and coloring books.
